The New Age has begun. (Originally posted prior to January 20, 2009)
The reference here to a scene in The Lord of the Rings Return of the King in which Gandalf crowns Aragorn King of Gondor is very much how I feel about the election of Barack Obama. He has defeated the powers of darkness to usher in a new age of peace and justice. We are all counting on him to change our lives for the better. It is an understatement to say he has an uphill battle. He must ride out to the partisans and stake holders and nay-sayers and the fringe groups and build bridges, establish trust, negotiate treaties, and win some hearts along the way.
I believe he is up to the challenge. He has passed the test of winning over the majority of Americans who voted for him. Now he must keep us all happy. He must make decisions that make my life better while at the same time making your life better, and those two things might be at odds.
I for one am willing to give up a few things, to sacrifice a bit, if it means four years from now we will all be better off.
It appears that Mr. Obama is indeed trying to ride out and make peace with those who are no longer in power. Unfortunately, they are doing their best to resist change. Unlike Smeagol/Gollum wrestling with his soul and trying not to listen to his bad side, the Republicans are in Gollum-mode with hands over ears trying not to listen to their good side, blocking out the voice of the people who overwhelmingly voted for change. We’ll see how that works for them in a couple of years.
